Survey tools for startups

Ever wonder what people think of your business? Your brand, your product, your service? Sure, you could take a look at sales numbers and draw inferences and make your own interpretation of the data. Or, you could actually ask around and find out. While I’m not suggesting you walk door to door or make a thousand phone calls to your customer base asking what they think of your product’s latest incarnation. Instead, why not utilize a relatively low-cost (and sometimes free) means of acquiring honest, tangible answers? That’s right: online survey tools for startups. Sure, there are dozens of different survey tool platforms out there, but let’s take a look at a couple of online survey tools for startups.

SurveyGizmo

SurveyGizmo (surveygizmo.com): Also starting at an inviting $25 per month, SurveyGizmo gets the ball rolling. This is an online survey solution with some advanced features. SurveyGizmo offers reasonably priced packages to support varying needs and capacities. At $25 per month, providing basic logic tools, and more sophisticated and advanced packages at a slight bump, from $83 per month to $125 per month.

Pros: At all levels, SurveyGizmo offers basic piping, fully customizable survey look and feel, and the ability to embed images and videos hosted on your own website. Further, it’s mobile friendly and easy to implement.

Cons: Yes, SurveyGizmo’s more advanced packages offer many randomization options (question options, questions per survey page, among others), and skip logic, but be prepared to invest a bit of time getting acclimated to the process, as there is a bit of a learning curve. Sure, it’s not rocket science, but you’ll want to finish that second express first.

Verdict: As far as online survey tools go, SurveyGizmo come close to hitting the bull-eye of survey packages. As an SMB, you’ll appreciate the advanced functions and more complex actions, once you’ve invested a decent amount of time navigating the process. And when you need something simple, SurveyGizmo offers a stripped-down, no frills package to suit your needs.

SurveyMonkey

SurveyMonkey (surveymonkey.com): This is probably the most popular, or well-known online survey out there because it offers a stark and simple tool that works well and accommodates the needs of the most basic surveys. Even the free package is quite useful for very small and informal surveys, the lack of customization of the look of the survey: zero downloads of reports or data, and you can only collect 10 questions and 100 responses per survey. But c’mon, it’s the Free Package. It’s free! If you’re willing to spend a little, SurveyMonkey’s Select, Gold and Platinum packages offer a variety of advanced logic features (i.e., question and answer piping, text analysis).

Pros: With SurveyMonkey, most of its tools and applications are ready-made, or ready to use like they came right out of the box.

Cons: There are, on occasion, a few features that require a bit more time to navigate and use.

Verdict: Overall, SurveyMonkey strikes an SMB-friendly balance between a simple and intuitive interface and the provision of powerful capabilities. Of the three survey tools highlighted here, SurveyMonkey comes closest to having that “just-right” feature.
