I started a business, now what do I do?

You have a great idea; and nobody has thought of it yet. You have a skill that is in demand and you can get clients. Now what do you do? Having started many successful businesses, there are many foundational items that you need to do to get it off the ground. Here are some of the big ones:

  1. Legal & Accounting – Find a good accountant and attorney that specialize in small businesses. They will help you choose the company structure (LLC, Sub S etc.) and setup all the legal and tax items.

  2. Banking – I have found local community banks to be friendlier to local small businesses and their services are more personal. This can come in handy if you ever need to seek a line of credit.

  3. Office – What office? Today the world is virtual. For between $50 -$200 a month you can get a corporate address, get your mail and phone answered and maybe even use of a conference room or cube if you want to get out of the house.

  4. Email – There are so many good cloud options for email and collaboration you should never consider purchasing a piece of hardware unless it is a laptop or tablet. I especially like Microsoft’s Office 365. They have a partnership with GoDaddy to make setting up a domain, website and email very simple. For about $15 a month you get all the technology you need to run an office.

  5. Marketing – Even if you are the best piano repair person, you’ll be broke unless people know who you are. There are so many great tools and many free startup apps. Mailchimp is free if you send under 12,000 emails a month.

  6. Resources – There are so many great resources available to startup companies that are free or very low in cost. One of the best places to look is startupstash.com.

  7. Accounting – I would love to tell you Gravity Software® (Gravity) is the best product for a startup company, but in reality, a product like QuickBooks is a better starting point. As you grow, you will need the features of Gravity and we will be ready.

These are just some of the basics: keep your infrastructure small and inexpensive. You generally don’t make money from having a bigger office or investing in complex technology. Hire smartly; it is easy to hire somebody you know, but that can be the worst thing. It is hard to be the boss and maintain a personal relationship outside of work. Hiring employees should be the most important decision you make. The cost of hiring the wrong person can be huge.
