Startup success: Tips for managing obstacles
So you’ve thrown your hat into the [startup] ring. You have the next great idea and you’re set to conquer the world. Next up: sunshine and blue skies…
Then you hit a few speed bumps, issues and concerns that do more than raise an eyebrow or two. So what’s next? Time to fold? Walk away? Not by a long shot. Here are some useful tips to help you manage obstacles after launching your startup.
Anticipate, and adjust
Once the adrenaline of the launch has worn off, you’ll encounter more than your fair share of challenges. A billing mistake, a missed invoice, a publication deadline come and gone, it can happen. You’re smart and prudent and you’ve probably implemented measures to prevent mistakes, but they still happen. So as much as you might anticipate and prepare, the entrepreneurial powers that be will throw that curve ball. So be ready to adjust. Make sure you can recover. Those obstacles (cash flow problems, inventory issues, sales plateauing, or anything else that throws a wrench in your engine), may knock you down, but don’t let them knock you out. Dust yourself off, adjust and push forward.
Lead with passion
Remember, you’re got employees in the trenches right along with you. They’re looking to you for leadership. You need to be that beacon of consistency and light. So drive your new business with a passion that inspires. No need for the perfect speech or an eloquent delivery. Your team will follow your example of consistent professionalism and dedication.
Get a mentor
Unless you’re boldly going where no entrepreneur has gone before, there’s always someone you can consult. This doesn’t mean that you have to copy and paste an expert’s words of wisdom into your own course of action. You’re still in charge and those final decisions are yours to make.
