We’re excited to announce the latest enhancement in Gravity Software’s Version 7.0—Hierarchical Dimensions! This feature builds on our already powerful Dimensions functionality by allowing you to create structured, layered relationships between tags, making your reporting more intuitive, organized, and precise.

What are Hierarchical Dimensions?

For a while now, Gravity Software has included Dimensions, a powerful tool that allows you to tag and categorize financial transactions. Whether it’s a journal entry, a vendor bill, or other entries, you’ve been able to tag these transactions with specific categories (like properties or employee IDs) to improve your reporting accuracy. Dimensions have given you the flexibility to generate insightful reports by these tags, offering clarity and organization in your data.

Now, with Hierarchical Dimensions, we’ve taken this a step further by allowing users to create a parent-child structure within these tags. Instead of standalone tags, you can create linked levels that reflect how transactions relate to each other, making it easy to filter and view interconnected data.

How it works

Hierarchical Dimensions allow you to designate specific Dimensions as “parent” or “child” levels. For example, you might set up Customers as Dimension 1, with Projects as Dimension 2, and Tasks as Dimension 3. In this hierarchy, each Customer has specific Projects that can be associated only with them, and each Project can be further segmented into individual Tasks.

This new structure improves data organization and reporting workflows. When entering a transaction, you can now select a Customer, then see only the relevant Projects associated with that Customer, followed by the specific Tasks tied to each Project. This ensures that selections are accurate, minimizing the potential for tagging errors.

Real-life benefits of Hierarchical Dimensions

  1. Streamlined Reporting: With Hierarchical Dimensions, you can filter down to the specific details you need—such as only showing Projects and Tasks related to a particular Customer. This improves both speed and accuracy, enabling you to pull focused, comprehensive reports that align closely with your business structure.

  2. Enhanced Control Over Data: By creating these parent-child links, you can structure your data in a way that reflects your business relationships. This is particularly helpful for multi-entity organizations where projects, locations, or employees are linked to specific clients or business segments.

  3. Customizable Flexibility: We understand that one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why Hierarchical Dimensions give you the option to maintain independence where needed. For instance, if certain Tasks need to be flexible across multiple Projects, you can keep them independent while still linking Projects to specific Customers.

How to get started with Hierarchical Dimensions

To enable and configure Hierarchical Dimensions, go to your Dimension settings in Version 7.0. Here, you can choose the hierarchy levels that fit your organization’s needs.

With Hierarchical Dimensions, Gravity Software continues to empower organizations with advanced tools that simplify financial management and enhance reporting capabilities. We invite you to explore this feature and see firsthand how it can improve your team’s efficiency and data accuracy.
