As examples, let’s look at McDonalds and Starbucks. McDonalds offers an inexpensive meal, very fast, but with predictable but lower quality. Starbucks offers a cup of high quality coffee, fast, but it’s not inexpensive.

As a company grows it needs to define where it will be on these three sectors. What is your primary driver? Are you providing the highest quality service? If so, you will probably need the best people or equipment, and these resources don’t come cheap. Are you going to a Costco with great prices and Quality, but you have to bag your own groceries?
Sometimes defining your company’s direction is a no brainer. You gravitate towards one point on the triangle, say price, and the rest takes care of itself. But a startup company will usually try to provide everything it can to see what sticks, what sells and what they can make money at. As you grow you need to weed out some of these products or services and hone in on what you do best and can make money at. This means setting your company’s compass to one major axis on the triangle.
As you define your company’s direction you will find everything starting to come together well. Employees will have a clear understanding of what they are expected to deliver. New products or services are discovered that fit into the company’s wheelhouse. In the end, your company will grow faster and better than ever.
